Tackling the challenges that come with an aging population is one of the big public policy questions of our time – but the solution could be simple. And best of all, it costs peanuts.
New research shows the humble peanut could be a key factor in warding off cognitive decline.
The University of South Australia study looked at the diets of Chinese adults aged 55 and over and found that those who ate 10 grams or more of nuts a day had better mental functioning, memory and reasoning.
Lead researcher Dr Ming Li said those eating nuts outperformed those with a nut-free diet by as much as 60 per cent.
“Improved and preventative health care – including dietary modifications – can help address the challenges that an aging population presents,” Dr Li said.
Eating your way to a better brain is simple – nuts are high in healthy fats, protein and fibre and can lower cholesterol and improve cognitive health. Peanuts also have specific anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that can preserve brainpower.
