Ancient sea creatures confirmed as our distant cousins

Humans have been linked to blind, alien-like marine creatures found in 500 million year old fossils.

A new study co-authored by Associate Professor John Paterson from the University of New England identified the creatures, known as vetulicolians, are the distant relatives of vertebrates.

Shaped like an hourglass, the creatures reached up to 15cm in length, making them some of our stranger cousins. The new discovery highlights the diversity of life 500 million years ago.

Australian universities make groundbreaking discoveries every day. Let’s support increased public investment to our universities. Sign our petition to support keeping Australia clever.
