Aussie research leads in the fight against coronavirus

A team of Australian researchers was the first in the world to successfully map the body’s immune response to COVID-19.

Melbourne researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity tracked the recovery of one of Australia’s first coronavirus patients.

By knowing how the body’s immune system fights back against the virus, researchers will now be able to find what elements are lacking in patients that do not recover.

Together, this information provides the path towards an effective vaccine.

Researchers at the Institute, which is a joint venture between The University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, said the body’s response was not dissimilar to the influenza recovery process.

This is an incredible step forward in understanding what drives recovery of COVID-19,” said University of Melbourne Professor Katherine Kedzierska.
