New cancer detecting camera technology has been inspired by nature’s vision systems, specifically, mantis shrimp eyes.
University of Queensland research found the shrimp’s eyes can detect polarized light and cancerous tissue reflects polarized light differently to surrounding tissue.
Professor Justin Marshall said the shrimp-inspired technology hoped to improve non-invasive detection methods and reduce the need for biopsies and other surgical procedures.
The research could potentially lead to future developments including the redesign of smartphone cameras to detect polarized light, allowing people to self-monitor for cancers.
