Central Queensland University helping keep our saviours safe.

Central Queensland University Professor, Brian Maguire, with his team have published a study examining the on the job risks to Australian paramedics. The study found that they are the group most at risk of workplace injury and accidents of any group identified by Safe Work Australia.

The largest proportion of injuries sustained occurred while lifting patients, as well as a significant number caused by incidents of violence. Safe Work Australia put the number of serious injuries sustained by paramedics every year at 94.6 per 1000 workers. That’s seven times the national average. On the job fatalities, largely a result of transportation events, were elven times the national average.

Professor Maguire stresses that more work needs to be done to ensure proper data collection and analysis can lead to real world occupational risk prevention strategies. Proper investment in studies like these are an important step in keeping those who we depend on safe.

You never know when you might need them.
