CONTACT KILLER: How copper can slow the spread of coronavirus

It’s a little flashier than your average assassin, but copper is racking up contact kills in the battle against COVID-19.

Long known as an antimicrobial agent, the metal has been shown to kill up to 96 per cent of SARSCoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19— in just two hours.

Now a Charles Darwin University (CDU) team has worked out how to get this copper out there on the beat.

Using 3D printing technology, high-traffic surfaces like doorhandles and touchpads can be given a copper coat in just five minutes.

CDU Director of Research and Innovation Dr Steve Rogers says covering existing metal surfaces with copper could reduce the survival of the virus, potentially reducing transmission.

The university partnered with technology developer SPEE3D to create and trial the ingenious new method and is now preparing to roll out their work more widely.
