A diet rich in colourful fruits and vegetables delays the onset of age-related cataracts, new research has found.
Colourful fruits and vegetables – such as citrus, capsicum, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, broccoli and kale – are high in antioxidants.
A world-first study from the University of South Australia and Xi’an Jiaotong University has found antioxidants lower the risk of age-related cataracts.
University of South Australia Senior Research Fellow Dr Ming Li said the breakthrough research could lead to significant savings in the national health bill, with cataract surgery one of the most common elective procedures in Australia.
“Age-related cataracts are the leading cause of visual impairment among the elderly throughout the world, with unoperated cataracts contributing to 35 per cent of all blindness,” Dr Li said.
“If we could delay the onset of age-related cataracts by 10 years, it could halve the number of people requiring surgery.”
