Dr Mashtoub, from the School of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Western Australia, has been studying the potential of Emu oil to treat damage and inflammation of the bowel caused by ulcerative colitis.
Having received a research grant from the Western Australian Cancer Council, she hopes that her research will provide those patients suffering from these incurable diseases with a reliable, natural alternative to chemotherapy, which can have harmful and long lasting side-effects.
One of the main challenges with using Emu oil as a treatment is consistency, given that different batches can have slightly different compositions. Dr Mashtoub said she was also “looking at experimenting with different batches of emu oil and making sure that the efficacy of emu oil is consistent regardless of where it comes from.”
With proper funding for clinical trials, this natural treatment method could be a world first bowel cancer treatment and an exciting step toward natural disease and symptom management.
