In an Australian first, a team from Swinburne University of Technology has been working in partnership with Australian companies BusTech and AutoCRC to design, engineer and manufacture an electric bus.
The challenge for the team at Swinburne was to figure out the best way to integrate electric vehicle technology into the complex array of subsystems required to control the bus. It was also important that the team develop a system that could cope with future upgrades and improvements, in order to keep costs down as electric vehicle technology improves. Overall, the team believes this approach makes the electric bus 80% cheaper to maintain than existing diesel buses.
The project is proof of the value and capabilities of Australian manufacturers, and points to the need for continued investment by the government to support Australian innovation and global competitiveness.
