University of Wollongong increases protection and mobility for Australian soldiers

Welding and automation expertise developed at the University of Wollongong (UOW) is supporting Australian manufacturing as part of a new major defence contract.

The University’s research and development will play a critical role in supplying the Australian Defence Force with highly mobile armoured vehicles, known as the Hawkei. These will be built in Australia and will provide soldiers with increased protection and mobility, ultimately ensuring that the manufacturing industry does not lose competitive advantage with other countries.

Overall, the technology has reduced manufacturing time and costs and is proving to be useful far beyond its original purpose.

“The importance of the research support to our programs from the University of Wollongong in this program in particular, cannot be underestimated,” said Defence Materials Technology Centre’s CEO, Mark Hodge.
